Man Carries Dogs in His Backpack to Help Them

Dogs are great pets. Many people have dogs. They take their dogs for walks.
But a man in the U.S. also does something else with dogs.
狗是很棒的寵物，很多人喜歡帶狗出門散步！美國有一名男子帶狗散步的理由很特別。

Every week, this man carries a dog in his backpack. There is a new dog every
time! The man walks. The dog looks around. They take the train. They go to a
park. They go to a toy store!
他每個星期會把一隻不同的狗放進背包裡帶出門。人跟狗一起走路、搭火車，去公園，甚至是去玩具店。

The man does all of this to help the dog. The dog is not his. It lives in a
place for animals with no homes.
他這樣做是為了幫助這些狗。這些狗不是他的，而是住在收容所裡無家可歸的狗。

People do not see a dog in a backpack every day. Seeing one makes them happy.
They look at the dog. They want to pet it.
大家看到有人把狗放在背包裡都會覺得很新奇、很開心，也會想摸摸狗。

Maybe people will think the dog is funny and nice. Maybe someone will give it
a new home! The label on the backpack says "Adopt me."
這個背包上寫著:領養我吧。也許有人看到後會覺得這隻狗很可愛，願意帶牠回家。

The man makes a video of the dog's fun day. He puts it online. Millions of
people see it. And someone adopts the dog!
這個男子也會把狗狗有趣的一天拍成影片上傳到網路，讓數百萬的人都看得到，其中總會有人願意領養！

Because of this man, many dogs have a happy life in a new home!

Transportation subsidies for Indigenous Kaohsiung residents want to lessen
health inequality

Have you ever heard the word "inequality" (不公平)?

It's a word we use when something is not fair, or not equal.

There are also different types of inequality.

One type of inequality is something called "health inequality."

Health inequality has many meanings.

It could be that people don't have equal access to healthcare (保健).

Maybe they live very far away from a hospital.

Or maybe they don't have enough money to pay to go to the doctor.

If someone doesn't have access to healthcare, it may not be their fault.

It could be that they were born and grew up in a place that was very far from
a doctor's office.

But that shouldn't mean that they don't get the same quality (品質) of
healthcare.

So how can we fix problems like this?

Well, some parts of Taiwan are taking steps to try to lessen health
inequality.

台灣目前有些縣市很努力減少衛生不公的問題。

In Kaohsiung, the government has something called transportation subsidies
(交通補助) for Indigenous people (原住民) who live very far from a doctor.

Even though Kaohsiung is a big city, many people in the mountains live very
far away from a hospital or a doctor's office.

That means, if they need to go see a doctor, it can be very expensive.

If you need to take a taxi all that way, who knows how much it would cost!

So if you are one of these Indigenous Kaohsiung residents who lives in the
city's Maolin, Taoyuan, or Namaxia districts, then you can apply for these
subsidies.

You can use them if you need to go to the doctor, the emergency room, or
pregnant women can also use them for going to the doctor to check up on their
babies.

高雄幾區的原住民可以利用這些交通補助去看醫生或是去做產前檢查。

How much money can you get?

It depends on how far you live from the hospital.

For some kinds of doctor's appointments, if you have to travel for more than
40 kilometers you can get up to 1000 NT.

The Kaohsiung city government says that over 1800 people have used the
subsidies.

They hope that it will improve health equality and make it easier for people
in rural (偏僻的) areas to see the doctor.

The government last year also made it so that more people could use the
subsidies.

Now, pregnant women who are not Indigenous but live in mostly Indigenous
places can apply too.

One pregnant woman from Maolin said that the subsidies were a big help to get
her baby checked up on.

Exhibit opens honoring Japanese Americans who fought in World War II

In the US, there's a new exhibit (展覽) open to help people learn about a
group they might not know about.

Let me tell you a little bit of history.

During World War II, the US put many Japanese Americans in something called
internment camps and called them enemies of the US.

世界二戰時候，美國政府把很多日裔的美國人囚禁，還把他們稱?美國的"敵人。"

In 1942, the US government put about 112,000 ethnically Japanese people that
lived in the US into these camps.

Most of them were US citizens (美國公民) and many had never been to Japan.

They had to leave their lives behind, and they only had 2 days to prepare.

In the camps, people would live together with many families and only a few
things.

It was often very cold inside the houses they lived in and the conditions
weren't very good.

A lot of those people in the camps were very very old or very very young.

It's a really terrible thing that the government did, and they didn't
apologize for it until 1988- more than 40 years later.

美國政府40年後才正式道歉。

But even with all this happening, many Japanese Americans still signed up to
fight for the US in the war.

The new exhibit honors those soldiers.

It's called "I am an American: The Nisei Soldier Experience."

"Nisei" is a Japanese word that means someone whose parents immigrated from
Japan.

But why would those soldiers want to join the military to protect the US
while their families were being discriminated against?

欸可是為什麼那些日裔美國人會想要當兵呢？美國政府不是同時就把他們家人囚禁嗎？

It's confusing, right?

I think it's because they wanted to show that they were loyal (忠實) to the
US and show that they were "good" Americans because so many people doubted
them.

About 33,000 Japanese Americans fought in World War II.

The exhibit is a traveling one, so it can go to many places.

It's starting in San Francisco, and it shows family photos from the soldiers,
as well as some of their things- like an ID card and a travel bag- and
information about them.

The soldiers' relatives (親戚) shared the things so that people could
remember them.

One of the people they talk about at the exhibit is a man named Robert Kuroda.

He joined the army because he couldn't get a job in Hawaii because he was
Japanese.

He thought that if he joined the army, people would have to give him a job
after.

But he died during the war.

He later got a special award for soldiers.

At the exhibit, they show his award and talk about how he graduated from high
school- he was the first of his nine siblings to graduate!

If you want to see the exhibit but aren't in San Francisco， 可以不用急！

It will happen for 5 years all across the US, like in Honolulu, Hawaii and
Portland, Oregon.
