Hello and welcome back to a new episode of News Bites!
I’m Allie Highsmith.
And I’m Ron Stuart.
In this episode of News Bites: Three Taiwanese municipalities make Michelin
Bib Gourmand list for the first time!
And, a church in Sweden makes a big move.
And in this episode’s News Flash: budget.

New Taipei, Hsinchu County, and Hsinchu City debut on Bib Gourmand rankings
The Taiwan Michelin 米其林 Guide released its new Bib Gourmand rankings
On this year’s list, three Taiwanese municipalities 縣市 are being
recommended for the first time ever!
Those municipalities are New Taipei City, Hsinchu City, and Hsinchu County.
Other municipalities that were already on the list are Taipei, Tainan,
Kaohsiung, and Taichung.
In total 總共, there are 144 restaurants on the list.
37 of them are new this year.
Taipei has the highest proportion 比例 of restaurants on the list.
Over one quarter of restaurants on the Bib Gourmand list are in Taipei City.
Next up is Tainan.
Tainan had 21% of restaurants on the list.
Tainan is certainly known as a popular food destination in Taiwan!
Kaohsiung came in third place, with 17% of all the restaurants on the list.
And Taichung was a close fourth, with 16%.
At the bottom of the list are the three newcomers- New Taipei with 10%,
Hsinchu County and Hsinchu City with 5% each.
The Bib Gourmand list is different from the Michelin Guide.
It’s more about finding restaurants with the best bang for your buck!
In other words (換句話?), it recommends restaurants where you can get great
food, for not too high of a price.
Michelin says, Hsinchu being on the list this year shows that Hakka (客家)
food is getting more attention now.
They say that Hakka cuisine traditions use more bold, savory flavors.
And, many of the restaurants being recommended for the first time show off
Taiwanese specialties, like taro balls 芋
頭球, soy milk 豆漿, and pork knuckle 豬?.

I know, right?!
But hey, at least I don’t have to move a church.
Umm…a church?
Yeah! In Sweden 瑞典, people moved a whole church from one place to another!
The church is 113 years old.
Well, how far did they move the church?
They had to move it about 5 kilometers 五公里 away!
The church was put on top of a big rolling platform 有輪子的平臺 so that
people could roll it from the first place to the new one.
Wow, it must take a very long time to move it that far, even though the
distance 距離 is not very long.
Yes, it took two days to move the church.
The people moved it at a maximum speed of 500 meters per hour.
This happened in the Swedish town of Kiruna.
Wait wait wait- why did they have to move it in the first place?
Actually, it’s a problem that all of Kiruna is facing 面對: in parts of the
town, the earth is cracking!
The town has had a lot of mining 採礦 that caused parts of the earth to crack.
Mining iron 鐵礦 is common in that area, about 145 kilometers north of the
Arctic Circle
But the law in Sweden says that companies cannot mine under buildings.
The town has been moving lots of buildings so that they will not be destroyed
They started doing that in the 2010s.
The church, called the Kiruna Kyrka in Swedish, was built in 1912 and weighs
672 tonnes!
Some people think the church is one of Sweden’s most beautiful buildings!
Officials say that they have prepared 準備 a lot for the move.
They emphasize that the process is very complex and big, so they need to
control all details.
They say that one of the biggest challenges 挑戰 was making the road big
enough for the church to pass through.
They needed to take down traffic lights and a bridge!
And, it’s important to protect 保護 the inside of the church, like a
painting made by one of the members of the Swedish royal family.
Wait, this move must be extremely expensive…
That’s right! But the company that runs the iron mine is paying for the city
to relocate all these buildings- including the church.
The whole thing will cost about one billion USD- that’s about 30 billion
NTD!
Local residents say that the whole thing is very moving 感動.
They emphasize that the church is a place for the community to get together.
It’s full of memories, with over 100 years of history.
One person says, the move brings happy and sad memories into the future.
