Star’s Light Shows Scientists a Surprise

One day, scientists looked at a star. Before, the star's light stayed the
same. But then it went off and on many times!
科學家們正在觀察一顆星星。這顆星的光以前都很穩定，但是最近它開始閃爍個不停！

The scientists studied the star. They got a surprise! They found the star's
light was not going off and on! It stayed the same!
科學家研究之後很驚訝！其實那顆星的光並沒有變化！

Lots of dust and rocks were between the Earth and the star. The dust and
rocks moved. So sometimes the scientists did not see the star's light. It is
like when clouds hide the sun's light from us.
在地球和這顆恆星之間，有很多灰塵跟石頭。它們會移動，有可能擋住星光，就像雲會把太陽光遮住一樣。

The dust and rocks were made by a big crash. BOOM! Two planets crashed! These
planets were eleven thousand light years away from Earth. That is very, very
far away.
那些灰塵跟石頭是一次巨大的撞擊造成的。距離地球一萬一千光年之外的兩顆行星相撞，還好離我們非常遙遠。

Scientists say a big rock crashed into the Earth long ago. That crash made
our moon! Maybe this new crash will make a new moon!
科學家說，很久以前也有一顆大隕石墜毀在地球，月亮就是從那次撞擊形成的！所以這次新的撞擊，也可能有新月亮。

Now a big new telescope can find many more crashes. Then scientists can learn
more about moons and planets. This will help them find planets we can live
on.
現在，有一台新的大型望遠鏡，可以發現更多這樣的撞擊事件。科學家想更了解月球跟行星的資訊，尋找適合人類居住的星球。

A Fireball Over Taitung

Have you ever looked up at the night sky and seen something streak across it?

That happened in Taiwan last week.

People in Taitung saw a bright light moving slowly across the sky.
有人在台東的夜空中看到一道明亮的光，緩緩劃過天際。

It looked like a very big shooting star (流星).

Cameras near the coast and on the Southern Cross-Island Highway caught the
whole thing.
那道光在直播攝影機前出現，慢慢地飛越夜空。

The object glowed brightly and moved across the sky for about 15 seconds.

Then it broke into two pieces and disappeared.

So…what was it?

According to Liu Chih-an (劉志安), a director of the Taipei Amateur Astronomers
Association (台北市天文協會), it was not a meteor (隕石).

He thinks it was space debris (太空殘骸碎片) – a man-made object, like part of a
rocket or a satellite (衛星).

Here is how you can tell the difference.

Meteors usually move fast and stay in one piece.

Space debris moves more slowly.

Space debris also often breaks apart as it falls through the atmosphere (大氣層).

That is exactly what happened last week.

The fireball (火球) got a lot of attention on social media.

Many people in Taiwan saw it and shared videos online.

And because the light lasted 15 whole seconds – much longer than a regular
shooting star – people had some fun with it.

One user joked, "Fifteen seconds is long enough to make a lot of wishes!"

Others wondered: does a wish still count if it is not a real star?

Scientists say the object burned up completely before it could reach the
ground.
科學家說，這個物體在落地之前就已經完全燃燒殆盡了。

So thankfully, no one was in danger.

As humans send more satellites and rockets into space, space debris is
becoming a bigger topic.

There are thousands of old or broken objects floating in orbit (軌道) around
Earth.

Sometimes, they fall back down.

Most of the time, they burn up – and give us an unexpected light show.

Have you ever looked at your dog or cat and wondered: what are you thinking
right now?

Well, a company in China says it has the answer.

A startup (新創公司) called Meng Xiaoyi, based in Hangzhou (杭州), just started
selling a new device called PettiChat.

It is a small wearable gadget that clips around your pet's neck.

The company says it can listen to your pet's sounds and read its body
language, and then translate them into words.

How accurate (準確) is it?

The company says it is 95% accurate.

That means almost every message your pet "sends" gets correctly translated.

More than 10,000 people have already ordered one.

The device costs about 150 US dollars (約四千五百元台幣).

But here is the part that makes scientists and many people raise an eyebrow.

The 95% accuracy claim has no proof behind it.

No studies.

No tests by other scientists.

Just a number the company put on their website.

這個95%的準確率沒有任何科學研究或獨立測試來支持。

The company was also started just four months ago – in January 2026.

Chinese social media users were quick to joke about it.

Some called the device a "human intelligence test."

In other words: if you buy it without asking questions, the joke might be on
you.

To be fair, the company did get one million US dollars from investors.

And the idea itself is not crazy.

Real scientists have been studying animal communication (動物溝通) for many years.

They believe AI might one day help us better understand what animals are
saying.

So – maybe PettiChat works great.

Maybe it does not.

Right now, there is just not enough information to know.

But one thing is for sure: people really, really want to talk to their pets.

In today's News Flash, our word is "debris"!

Debris is a noun.

Say it with us: deh-BREE.

Debris means broken pieces or waste material left behind after something is
damaged or destroyed.

You can use this word in many situations.

碎片、殘骸、廢棄物，都可以用 debris 這個字。

For example: after a storm, there might be debris on the street – broken
branches, leaves, and trash.

In space, debris means old satellites, broken rockets, and other man-made
objects floating around Earth.

When these objects fall back into the atmosphere, they usually burn up.

But scientists keep track of space debris carefully, because some pieces are
very large.

Understanding debris, in space and on Earth, helps us keep things safe and
clean.
