A Big Pizza Surprise

A pizza shop was having a busy day. But it was going to get busier! Someone
called the shop. The person ordered 18 pizzas! That is a lot of pizzas!
美國一家忙碌的披薩店接到電話訂單，竟然點了18個大披薩！

The workers had so much to do then! So the pizza shop stopped taking orders.
The workers worked and worked and worked. Forty minutes later, all of the
pizzas were ready. But… nobody came to pick them up!
店員努力製作披薩，終於在40分鐘之後完成了訂單，卻沒有任何人來領。

A worker called the phone number for the order. The person on the phone said,
"I did not order those pizzas!"
Who ordered the pizzas? No one knows. It was a prank! A prank is a trick.
Pranks can be fun. But some pranks are not nice. This one was not nice! Those
18 pizzas cost about 9,500 Taiwan dollars!
原來這是一場惡作劇，但是一點也不好玩，因為18個披薩要價約9500元台幣！

The pizzas had nowhere to go. Then the pizza shop owner had a great idea. He
wanted to do something nice. His friend helped him.
這些披薩無處可去，於是披薩店老闆想到了一個好主意，他請朋友來幫忙。

His friend put the pizzas in his car. He drove to a hospital. He gave the
pizzas to the doctors and nurses.
The doctors and nurses were very happy! The pizzas were a big, delicious
surprise!
朋友開車把披薩送到附近的醫院，分給醫生和護士們，讓他們非常開心。惡作劇變成了一個溫暖的驚喜。

The 18 pizzas were ordered for a prank. That was not nice. But the pizza shop
made a bad prank into something kind. It shared with others!

Water buffalo finds a new home in old age

We all know that when people get old, we retire (退休).

That means, we stop working and rest after a life of hard work.

But maybe you didn’t know that animals need to retire too!

There’s a water buffalo named White Dolphin that is now retired and living in
Yunlin County.

White Dolphin is 22 years old.

She spent most of her life plowing fields (耕田) on Green Island.

But now she gets to rest.

White Dolphin arrived at a retirement center in Tuku Township after a 17-hour
trip on boats and in cars.

The man who runs the retirement center is surnamed Lin.

He said that her trip was affected by Typhoon Dolphin- that’s where the water
buffalo got her name.

Lin says, White Dolphin is healthy and only a little sunburned (曬傷).

After she arrived at the retirement center, she got used to (適應了) her new
environment.

She likes to play in the water and hang out with the center’s other water
buffalo.

White Dolphin’s retirement is only possible because of a very nice animal
lover, who paid for her to be moved to the retirement center.

The animal lover is surnamed (姓) Chen.

She first met White Dolphin about 10 years ago when she was visiting Green
Island.

Many years later, she went back to Green Island, and she saw the same water
buffalo still hard at work.

Chen decided to buy her and make sure that she could spend the last years of
her life at the Yunlin retirement center.

But White Dolphin was still healthy and could still work.

So, if Chen had not bought her, she might have been sold to someone else and
worked somewhere else.

Chen paid about 25,000 NT for White Dolphin.

But she also paid for all of the costs of moving her to Yunlin.

So she spent about 50,000 NT in total for the whole thing.

陳姓女子付了總共五萬塊臺幣，爲了買White Dolphin而把她送到雲林。

Now, the retirement center will pay for caring for White Dolphin.

And where does it get the money for that?

The center gets donations (捐款) from people who want to help.

He established (建立了) the center in 2022.

So far, the center has cared for 6 water buffalo.

He says that he wanted to establish the center because both farmers and water
buffalo in Taiwan’s rural areas are getting older.

And Lin said he wanted to recognize the animals’ hard work.

The cost of convenience: relatives of Korean delivery workers protest

Oh! My package (包裹) was delivered!

What did you order?

Just some socks, a phone charger, a hairbrush, some Korean snacks, a new
lightbulb… (fading out)

Oh, wow, okay, when did you order all that stuff?

Last night! It’s so convenient, I can order stuff on a Sunday night and it
arrives Monday morning!

Yeah, it is convenient… maybe a little too convenient?

會不會有點太方便了？

What do you mean?

Well, have you ever thought about how the company is able to package and ship
your things so quickly?

Hm… I guess someone has to do all the packaging and driving!

Right. In Korea, people are worried about this problem.

There’s one example of a man surnamed Jang.

He worked for a website called Coupang.

He worked overnight shifts (晚班) to move things across a big warehouse (貨倉)
for more than a year.

Jang’s mom says he lost a lot of weight (瘦了很多) and was tired a lot.

But he didn’t want to quit because he thought his coworkers would be very 辛苦
without him.

He later died from a heart attack (心肌梗塞) at only 27 years old.

An investigation found that the heart attack was because Jang worked too
much, especially overnight.

Now, more and more people in Korea are talking about this issue.

A union (工會) says that deaths from overwork are still happening.

Coupang’s policy is like this: people who buy things before midnight can get
the item by 7am the next day.

What?! That’s less than 7 hours!

Yep, and it’s only possible because of all the people who work overnight.

這個公司的網上訂購制度指定，如果客人在晚上十二點前下單，就可以隔天早上7點前收到包裹。

But working overnight is not only linked to heart attacks; experts say it
also might cause cancer (癌症).

Even though it’s dangerous, this is very complicated (複雜的), because some
drivers want to work overnight.

That’s because they make more money that way.

So there are still some benefits (優點) to working overnight.

But the science is clear: not sleeping enough is really, really bad for your
health.

Is the government doing anything to help?

Well, they are limiting (限定) weekly working hours at 52 and there’s a new law
that punishes higher-ups in companies (公司的主管們) where people die at work.

But activists say it’s not enough; even with good rules, the government also
has to make sure that people are actually following them.
