After Long Wait, Taichung School Gets New Sports Field

In 2004, a big typhoon hit Taiwan. It hurt many people. It destroyed many
homes and businesses. Taichung was one of the cities the big typhoon hit. The
wind and rain were very strong! The typhoon destroyed an elementary school
sports field!
2004 年有一個大颱風襲擊台灣，台中受到很大損失，一座小學操場被風雨毀掉!

This typhoon hurt Taichung very badly. People there had to build their city
again. They cleaned up roads. They fixed buildings. They took care of family
and friends who were hurt.
台中人努力重建城市，他們清理道路、重新蓋大樓，還有照顧受傷的民眾。

The school and the local people tried to fix the sports field. But fixing it
was not easy. There were many problems. They took a lot of time.
而那座小學也試著修理操場，但是問題太多了，花了很多時間。

Now it's 21 years after the big typhoon. And it's an exciting time for the
school and the local people!
現在過了 21 年，學校迎接一個讓人興奮的時刻!

The school will have a very nice new sports field by the end of the year!
After waiting for so long, the kids and the local people will be able to
enjoy having a sports field.
今年年底學校會有新操場！學生和當地民眾終於能好好享受運動。

時代雜誌評選的「全球最具影響力百人榜」中，有兩位來自台灣的人士
Magazine's 100 Most Influential People List Includes Two Taiwanese-Americans

Every year, a magazine in the U.S. makes a list of one hundred people.

The work these people do, the ideas they have, or the things they decide to
do can change lives.

Two of the people are Taiwanese-Americans!

Lisa Su is the Chair, CEO, and president (蘇姿丰是董事長、執行長兼總裁) of a
big American semiconductor company (半導體公司).

She was born in Tainan.

When she was very young, her family moved to New York City.

Her parents wanted her to study math and science.

These subjects interested her.

She liked to know how things worked.

She wanted to be an engineer.

In her first year of university (大學), Su became interested in
semiconductors.

She was so interested in them that she got a Ph.D (博士學位) in electrical
engineering (電機工程)!

Su likes knowing that her work is helping billions of people every day.

She wants to use technology (科技) for the good of the world.

Jon M. Chu is a movie director (朱浩偉是電影導演).

His mother is Taiwanese.

She didn't tell her kids to be lawyers or doctors.

She told them to follow their dreams.

But Chu was still scared when he told her that he wanted to make movies.

What did she do?

She bought him lots of books on how to make movies!

Chu has made different kinds of movies.

Two of his movies are "Crazy Rich Asians" (瘋狂亞洲富豪) and "Wicked"
(魔法壞女巫).

"Crazy Rich Asians" was unusual in the U.S. because it had so many Asian
actors.

Having more Asian actors in movies is important to Chu.

Some of Chu's movies have very cool dancing in them.

Some are dance movies and others are musicals (音樂劇), like "Wicked."

Outside of movies, once he, along with a big dance crew (舞蹈團隊), had a big
YouTube dance battle with Miley Cyrus and her dance crew!

He also made a web series (網路劇) called "The LXD" or "The Legion of
Extraordinary Dancers" (非凡舞團).

At different times, people have said these two people are visionary and have
shown that the impossible is possible (有遠見的人,
並證明了不可能的事是可能的).

Baker of the World's Best Croissant Was a Formula 1 Engineer

In Australia, a young girl used to watch Formula 1 races (一級方程式賽車).

She loved everything about Formula 1 racing.

So she became an aerospace (航太) engineer.

That's about making planes, space rockets, and spacecraft.

Formula 1 engineers think about how air moves around their team's cars.

They make cars so that air can help the cars move faster and better.

Formula 1 cars are like upside-down planes (顛倒過來的飛機).

Aerospace engineers have the skills (技能) to make Formula 1 cars.

When she was 23, the woman got a job with a Formula 1 team in the UK!

But the job was not what she thought it would be.

She liked to be with people, but she worked all day at her computer.

She was far from her family and friends.

She felt lonely and sad.

The woman started to bake at night after work.

She thought about being a baker.

She went to Paris (巴黎) and learned how to make croissant dough
(牛角麵包麵團).

She went back to Australia to open a bakery.

She wanted to make croissants... only croissants!

But... before the bakery opened, she realized (意識到) she had a BIG problem.

She only knew how to make the dough...

She didn't know how to bake it!

So... the woman used her aerospace engineering skills!

For three months, she made croissants every day.

She tested everything about them by making small changes every time.

That's what aerospace engineers do.

She got lots of data (數據) about the small changes.

She studied the data.

Finally, she found the best way to make the best croissant!

It takes three days, but she does it!

現在，人們排隊等待購買一位麵包師傅，利用賽車的航太技術，所製作出來的牛角麵包和其他糕點。

A U.S. magazine made a list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Two of the people, Lisa Su, the head of a semiconductor company, and Jon M.
Chu, a movie director, are Taiwanese-American.

A woman studied aerospace engineering to become a Formula 1 engineer.

She loved Formula 1, but her job did not make her happy, so she became a
baker.

Her engineering skills have made her the baker of the world's best croissant.

Oh! A mosquito (蚊子) bit me!

Where is it? I don't want it to bite me!

Hey! You said you bought a mosquito zapper (電蚊拍). Let's try it.

Here it is!

This looks kind of like a tennis racket (球拍)! Do I just hit mosquitoes with
it?

Yes, but first turn it on and then --- ZAP!

Cool! Where was this thing invented (發明)?

In Taiwan!

Oh yeah - I remember someone named Tsao-I Shih is said to be the inventor.

People in tropical (熱帶) countries love this mosquito zapper.

One person said it was one of the best things he bought one year.

Another person wanted a counter (計數器) on the racket so he could see how
many mosquitoes he zapped!

ZAP! ZAP! ZAP!
