Kids Are Hunting for Rocks in Parks
In Taiwan's parks, kids are looking everywhere. They are looking under plants
and trees. They are looking under benches where people sit. What are they
looking for?
The kids are not looking for a lost toy. They are not looking for money. And
they are not looking for trash! They are playing a game. They are hunting for
rocks! But they are not looking for any kind of rock. They are looking for
painted rocks!
More than 80,000 people play this game. Some of them paint pictures on rocks.
Some pictures are cute and some are cool. All of them make kids happy. Some
people write nice messages on their rocks too.
The game has some rules. They keep the game safe and good for people and
parks. One rule is to buy rocks to paint. Do not take them from the ground.
Another rule is to use eco-friendly, water-based paint. One more rule is to
hide the painted rocks in safe places. Do not hide rocks on roads!
People hide their rocks in parks. Then they go online. They tell everyone
about the rocks. Kids start hunting! When they find a rock, they can keep it.
Or they can hide it again!
More and more kids are hunting for painted rocks in parks. Do you want to
look for some too?

Hello and welcome to another episode of News Bites!
I’m Allie Highsmith.
And I’m Nancy Sun.
In today’s news:
A Taiwanese writer says AI is causing big problems for literary awards...and
in the U.S., teenagers are making their own rules for AI at school.
Let’s begin!
__________
Did AI Write This? Taiwan's Literary Awards Face a New Problem
When someone enters a writing contest, we usually expect one thing:
They write the story themselves.
But artificial intelligence is making that much harder to know.
Taiwanese writer Chu Yu-hsun (朱宥勳) says AI-generated writing is creating a
serious problem for literary awards (文學獎).
A literary award is a prize given to excellent writing, such as a novel,
poem, or short story.
Chu has worked as a judge for many writing contests.
And he says this year has been especially difficult.
He estimates that nearly 40 percent of the novel submissions (投稿作品) he
reviewed this year appeared to be written with AI.
He said it was not always easy to notice.
Sometimes he would read many stories before realizing that several had the
same writing style.
That made judging much harder.
In the past, judges (評審) had to find the best writing.
Now, Chu says they also have to ask another question:
"Was this written by a person?"
He compared it to playing baseball.
Imagine a pitcher (投手) throws three balls at you at the same time.
But only one is real.
You have to decide which ball is real before you can even try to hit it.
Chu also admits (承認) judges can make mistakes.
They might think a real person's writing was made by AI.
Or they might fail to notice writing that actually was made by AI.
That is one reason AI detectors cannot completely solve the problem.
So what should writing contests do?
Chu says that starting next year, he will not judge awards unless they
clearly ban AI-generated work.
He also wants stronger rules
For example, writers could be asked to sign a statement saying their work is
original (原創的).
They could also keep notes or records showing how they created their stories.
AI can help people write.
But for literary awards, Chu says judges need to know whose creativity they
are really judging.

Students Write the Rules for AI at School
Since we're already talking about AI...
Should students be allowed to use AI for homework?
What about tests?
And when should schools start teaching students how to use AI safely?
Adults in the United States are still trying to answer these questions.
So this summer, a group of teenagers tried answering them themselves.
Ninety-eight high school students from all 50 U.S. states met in Boston.
They gathered inside a copy of the U.S. Senate chamber (模擬的美國參議院).
But they were not real senators (參議員).
Instead, they acted like lawmakers for a weekend.
Their goal was to create a policy (政策、規定) for how schools should use
artificial intelligence.
The students discussed many difficult questions.
Should AI be allowed to write an assignment?
Should students use it during tests?
What should teachers do if they think someone used AI to cheat (作弊)?
After debating and changing their ideas, the students created something
called the Students First Act.
They voted 82 to 16 to approve it. But the Students First Act is not a real
law.
It is a set of recommendations that school leaders can use when making their
own AI rules.
One of the students' biggest ideas was AI literacy (AI素養).
AI literacy means understanding what AI can do, what its risks are (有什麼風險),
and how to use it responsibly.
The students said schools should start teaching this as soon as children
begin using digital devices in class.
They also proposed banning AI during graded tests.
And they said students should not use AI to write their homework.
However, older students could use it for things such as brainstorming,
editing, and studying.
The students also worried about false accusations.
AI detectors sometimes make mistakes.
So if a computer says a student may have used AI improperly (不恰當地使用), the
students said teachers should investigate (調查) before accusing anyone of
cheating.
They also suggested asking students to explain their projects in person.
That way, teachers can check whether students really understand their own
work.
The students' policy will now be shared with thousands of school leaders
across the United States.
It may not be a real law.
But the people most affected by AI in school are now helping adults decide
what the rules should be.
__________
RECAP
So, in today’s News Bites:
Taiwanese writer Chu Yu-hsun says AI-generated writing is making literary
awards much harder to judge.
Starting next year, he says he will only judge contests that clearly ban
AI-generated entries.
__________
And,
Ninety-eight high school students in the US met in Boston to create their own
rules for AI in schools.
Their Students First Act says schools should teach AI literacy, ban AI during
graded tests, and make sure students still do their own thinking.
The proposal is not a real law, but it will be shared with school leaders
across the United States.
__________
NEWS FLASH
In today’s News Flash, our word is "detect"!
“Detect" is a verb.
It means to discover or notice something that may be difficult to see.
In our first story, literary judges are trying to detect whether a story was
written by AI.
But that can be difficult, and judges may sometimes make mistakes.
In our second story, schools sometimes use AI detectors to check students'
work.
A "detector" is a tool that tries to detect something.
