Typhoon Podul Heads Toward China After Causing Widespread Power Cuts | ![]() |
The Central Weather Administration says Typhoon Podul has weakened slightly over
the past three hours — but is still bringing strong winds and heavy rain to
southern Taiwan.
Podul made landfall in Taitung just after 1 PM and exited via Tainan’s Cigu
District around 4 PM.
It’s now over waters south-southeast of Penghu, moving west-northwest.
Its outer bands are affecting Taitung, Hualien, all areas south of Miaoli, as
well as Penghu and Kinmen.
Eastern Taiwan, southern counties, and Penghu continue to see strong winds
and heavy rain.
Torrential rain warnings — signaling more than 350 mm in 24 hours or 200 mm
in three hours — are in place for Hualien, Taitung, the Hengchun Peninsula,
and mountainous areas of Kaohsiung and Pingtung.
Extremely heavy rain advisories — for over 200 mm in 24 hours or 100 mm in
three hours — have been issued for Tainan, Kaohsiung, Chiayi County,
Pingtung, Yilan’s mountains, and outlying Green and Orchid Islands.
Forecasters expect the storm to keep weakening and its radius to shrink as it
heads toward mainland China.
So far, only Kinmen has announced work and class cancellations for tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Taipower says more than 61 thousand households remain without
power — mostly in Taitung, followed by Tainan and Kaohsiung — with smaller
outages in Yilan and Greater Taipei.
Over 254 thousand households experienced power cuts as a result of the storm
today.
Residents are urged to stay clear of downed wires and use the Taipower app or
website to report any further outages.
