Tai-Ex opening

The Tai-Ex opened up 9.7-points this morning from yesterday's close, at
10,947 on turnover of $2.44 billion NT.

The market closed higher Thursday to move above the five-day moving average.

And analysts say the market is likely to stay between 10,800 and 11,000 point
marks in the short term due to volatility in global markets.

Cabinet approves bill to raise pay for low-ranking police

The Cabinet has approved a draft amendment to the Police Personnel Management
Act, which is aimed at increasing the monthly salaries of low-ranking police
officers and firefighters.

Interior Minister Yeh Jun-rong says the bill proposes to adjust the pay scale
for low-level police and firefighters by adding another grade at the top.

And under the proposal, 66,000 police officers and firefighters will receive
a pay raise of 1,370 N-T per month.

Cabinet spokesman Hsu Guo-yong says the annual budget for the proposed pay
raise will be 700-million N-T.

The draft bill will now be submitted to the Legislature for review.

Taiwan slips to 17th place in IMD competitiveness ranking

Taiwan has been ranked 17th in global competitiveness by the Swiss-based
International Institute for Management Development (IMD) for 2018, down
three notches from last year.

Taiwan was fourth among Asian economies, behind Hong Kong, Singapore and
China, according to the 2018 IMD World Competitiveness Ranking published
Thursday.

This marks the first time Taiwan's ranking has lagged behind that of China,
which improved five spots to 13th this year.

It is also Taiwan's worst showing in nine years since 2009, when it was
23rd.

NKorea US talks

North Korea says it's still willing to sit down for talks with the United
States ``at any time, at any format'' just hours after President Donald Trump
abruptly canceled his planned summit with the North's leader Kim Jong Un.

The statement by Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye Gwan says the North is
``willing to give the U.S. time and opportunities'' to reconsider talks that
had been set for June 12-th in Singapore.

Trump canceled the meeting on Thursday, citing ``tremendous anger and open
hostility'' in a North Korean statement released earlier in the day.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in says he was ``very perplexed'' at Trump's
announcement.

This comes after Kim made good on his promise to demolish his country's
nuclear test site, which was formally closed in a series of huge explosions
Thursday as a small group of foreign journalists watched.

Weinstein surrender to police

Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein is expected to surrender to police in New
York on Friday.

He is likely to face charges for sexual assault, the first after more than 75
women accused him of inappropriate sexual behaviour.

EU Facebook

Facebook says it will not compensate users in the scandal over the misuse of
their personal data by political consultancy Cambridge Analytica.

The company made the statement in a list of written replies to questions by
European Union lawmakers.

The answers were promised after testimony earlier this week by CEO Mark
Zuckerberg in Brussels had left EU lawmakers frustrated about a lack of
responses.

Cambridge Analytica used the data of millions of Facebook users to target ads
during political campaigns, including allegedly the U.S. presidential vote.

EU lawmakers said that would make Facebook liable for compensation toward EU
users.
