In Taiwan, the National Financial Stabilization Fund has authorized a market intervention to ease volatility and prop up investor confidence after the local stock market suffered its fourth-steepest single-session point decline.
This will be the 10th market intervention since the government established the 500 billion-NT stabilization fund in 2000 as a buffer against disruptive external events.
The TAIEX tumbled 1,873 points, or 4.5 percent, yesterday ... tracking heavy losses in US markets the night before.
The Taiex has shed more than 10,000 points, or 21 percent, since an intraday high of nearly 50,000 on Oct. 6.
Meanwhile, the Financial Supervisory Commission said in a separate statement that it had encouraged listed companies to buy back their shares ... and also placed restrictions on short-selling trades.
