A nearly complete fossil of a prehistoric whale discovered on the Hengchun Peninsula will go on public display tomorrow.
The fossil, discovered last July, is at the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium in Pingtung County.
The museum said it took four months of careful excavation and collection to recover the remains.
The whale was about 6 meters long, with more than 80 percent of its skeleton preserved. It's estimated to have lived about 100,000 years ago.
Researchers believe the whale may have belonged to the right whale family ... and vertebral growth plates suggest the sea mammal was likely a juvenile when it died.
