Three Taiwanese medical associations have issued a joint statement opposing the use of the anesthetic propofol to treat insomnia.
This follows reports of its misuse by clinics in Taiwan.
The Taiwan Society of Anesthesiologists, the Taiwanese Society of Psychiatry and the Taiwanese Society of Addiction Science say the intravenous anesthetic and sedative isn't indicated for treating insomnia or depression.
The groups stress that the loss of consciousness induced by the drug is NOT normal sleep.
They point to the demise of international pop star Michael Jackson, who died from acute propofol intoxication after receiving the drug from his personal physician.
They urged people experiencing psychological distress to seek evaluation and treatment from a psychiatrist.
Health Minister Shih Chung-liang (石崇良) made the same points on Thursday, noting the ministry hasn't ruled out the likelihood of investigating the improper use of propofol as a treatment for insomnia.
