In opening remarks, challenger Puma Shen said his priorities in the first 100 days of his term ... if elected ... are replanting trees, resolving issues around child abuse and improving school lunches.
Shen had eight minutes at the start of the debate to make the case for his candidacy. He said the focus of the debate shouldn't be on who wins or who loses ... but on exchanging views and presenting positions and values.
Shen differentiated his approach with Mayor Chiang Wan-an's campaign theme of "creating the future." Instead, Shen says his approach is "you say, I do." He says he'll fix municipal problems by tapping collective wisdom.
The incumbent spoke next, listing his first-term achievements, including completing the Taipei Dome, bringing an Nvidia headquarters to the city and instituting a free-milk campaign in schools.
He countered critics' charge that he talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk by saying "Chiang Wan-an keeps his word." He said he not only fulfilled his campaign promises from four years ago but went further ... citing as an example the free-milk program, which he said was something that had stymied the central government.
