The Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office said this morning that it is releasing a man on 100,000 NT bail after he admitted to fabricating a video of Taipei mayoral candidate Puma Shen.
In the video, a deepfake Shen admitted to receiving kickbacks in a US arms deal. The video was posted to the Threads social media platform.
Prosecutors said they arrested the man, surnamed Zheng, on Thursday, and that he confessed to the crime late last night.
As part of the bail arrangement, Zheng is banned from leaving the country for eight months.
He'll face a prison sentence of up to seven years, if convicted.
