Alleged Hong Kong gangster indicted over attack on political commentator
Posted on 2026-10-07 11:01:14
Yaita

Taichung prosecutors have indicted a Hong Kong national over an alleged
assault on Taiwanese-Japanese political commentator Akio Yaita.

That's after suspected gangster Liu Kong-faat allegedly punched Yaita in the
face in a Taichung hotel lobby over the summer.

Liu was charged with assault, public insult, public threat, and organized
crime.

Prosecutors say another four suspects, all also members of another Hong Kong
gang, were placed on a wanted list after fleeing the country.

They add that they're continuing to investigate the incident and understand
if there were any accomplices in Taiwan.

Liu was arrested at Taichung International Airport while attempting to flee
to Korea while the suspect had already left Taiwan...

and two others withdrew before the operation was carried out.

Prosecutrs are seeking five years behind bars for Liu.
