Fire, explosion in Tainan injure 13; homes, vehicles damaged

The Tainan City Government Fire Bureau says a fire and subsequent explosion
in a residential area in Tainan early this morning injured 13 people,
damaging eight homes and 20 vehicles.

The fire has been extinguished and an investigation is underway to determine
its cause.

The fire bureau said it dispatched 53 firetrucks and 144 firefighters to a
vacant lot on Haidian Road in Annan District, where waste materials had
caught fire.

Among the damaged vehicles were six firetrucks, one ambulance and two
disaster-relief vehicles.

The bureau said 36 residents in the affected area were evacuated. Three
firefighters and 10 other people sustained minor injuries and were sent to
hospitals for treatment.

All 13 have been discharged.

A preliminary investigation found aluminum-magnesium alloy and waste oil at
the fire site .
