The Centers for Disease Control is urging residents whose last Covid-19 vaccinations were more than 6 months ago to act soon to secure their choice of jabs.
The CDC says that around 440,000 doses of Moderna and Novovax vaccines are available, with the latter slated for destruction starting Aug. 1 as they pass their use-before date.
Moderna is an mRNA vaccine, while Novovax is made with virus protein subunits. People who prefer to avoid mRNA vaccines should act before the end of the month. The next available Novovax doses won't be released until October.
The CDC says Covid infections reached epidemic proportions in mid-July, with emergency-room visits associated with infection rising by two-thirds in the week ending July 18.
Seniors and people with complicating health conditions are most at-risk, but the CDC says only one in five people over 65 are up-to-date with their vaccinations.
