Taiwan's opposition-controlled Legislature has fast-tracked two referendum proposals, one on nuclear energy and one on medical euthanasia, to be held alongside nine-in-one local elections in November.
The KMT and TPP, which together hold a legislative majority, voted Tuesday to bypass the standard committee review stage for both proposals.
The KMT is seeking to abolish Taiwan's "Nuclear-Free Homeland" policy, arguing the move is necessary to ensure stable electricity supply and support Taiwan's growing artificial intelligence industry.
The TPP's euthanasia proposal would ask voters whether to legalize assisted dying under a regulated system for individuals suffering from intractable illness and unbearable pain.
The two proposals are among six total referendum initiatives put forward by the opposition ahead of the November 28-th local elections.
All proposals must still be verified by the Central Election Commission before they can be placed on the ballot.
