The Ministry of Justice has moved to reclassify etomidate as a Category 1 narcotic.
The change was made Wednesday by a ministry committee amid growing public concern over drug-impaired driving incidents involving the substance, which have caused multiple deaths and injuries in recent years.
The ministry says if the decision is formally approved and announced by the Cabinet, those convicted of manufacturing, transporting or selling the drug could face heavy prison sentences and the death penalty in the most serious cases.
The committee also approved reclassifying eight related substances as Category 1 narcotics, and designated two chemical precursors used in synthesizing etomidate as controlled substances subject to tighter regulation.
The Ministry of Justice said it would expedite administrative procedures before submitting the proposal to the Cabinet for formal approval.
