Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an boasted of six enhancements to education policy at this year's Taipei Education Expo.
Chiang said today that starting in the current academic year, elementary and junior high schools will have free lunches.
Among the other changes: Maximum class sizes will be reduced to 25 in elementary schools, 26 in junior high schools and 32 in senior high.
There will also be an incentive system for cross-school teacher exchanges and a paid overseas research program for outstanding teachers.
Chiang said the city's education budget will exceed NT$83 billion.
The Taipei Education Bureau said the price tag for the free-lunch program that will be made available for 186,000 students is 3.76 billion NT. Teachers and other staff who supervise lunchtimes will be granted subsidies as part of the program.
