Indian migrant worker plan to proceed only after careful review: Minister

Labor Minister Hung Sun-han says the potential introduction of Indian migrant workers will proceed only after careful review, as public debate over the policy intensifies.
Hung says any implementation would depend on industry demand and whether India's proposed framework meets Taiwan's requirements.
He had told lawmakers last week that the first group of Indian workers could arrive as early as the end of 2026.
Taiwan and India signed an agreement in 2024 to address Taiwan's labor shortage, but a petition launched earlier this month calling on the ministry to halt the plan and prioritize public safety and gender equality had gathered more than 34-thousand signatures as of Monday afternoon.
The petition cited concerns about sexual violence and questioned whether police clearance certificates are sufficient to screen for risks.
