US President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi have affirmed their shared commitment to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. They also said they opposed any attempts to unilaterally change the cross-strait status quo.
According to the White House, Takaichi and Trump discussed trade and cooperation in defense, technology and space when they met on Thursday.
Kyodo News reports that Takaichi expressed concern about the security environment in the Indo-Pacific in the face of an "increasingly assertive" China, while also noting reports that the US has shifted some of its military assets in the region to the Middle East.
Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed gratitude to the two leaders for reaffirming their commitment to security across the Taiwan Strait.
