The African monarchy of Eswatini has invited President Lai Ching-te to attend an April celebration of King Mswati III's 40th year since he was crowned.
Taiwan's Foreign Minister Lin Jia-long said today that the invitation will be assessed based on protocol, and the Presidential Office will announce any upcoming visit once a decision has been made.
Formerly known as Swaziland, Eswatini is Africa's last monarchy, and it's one of just 12 diplomatic allies that Taiwan has left.
Asked about the state of Taiwan-Eswatini relations, Lin said Taiwan is constructing a massive oil tank in the African country, and it's progressing on schedule.
With regard to a project that Beijing is participating in -- to build a dam in Eswatini -- Lin stressed that it's an international project, and it won't affect Taiwan-Eswatini relations.
