Taipower to submit restart plan for 2 nuclear power plants in March 2026

The Ministry of Economic Affairs says Taipower is expected to submit a plan to restart two of Taiwan's decommissioned nuclear power plants by March next year.
The MOEA said it has approved an evaluation report from the country's main power provider that found it feasible to restart the No. 3 nuclear power plant in New Taipei and the No. 2 plant in Pingtung County.
The ministry said it isn't feasible to restart Taiwan's first nuclear power plant at Jinshan. It said the equipment there is too old to restart safely.
The evaluation report was carried out in response to amendments to Taiwan's nuclear regulation law passed in May. The changes provide a legal basis for continuing to operate nuclear power plants even after they've entered the decommissioning stage.
The No. 2 reactor in southern Taiwan was shut down around the time of the act's passage. It was the last operational nuclear power plant in the country.
There's currently no plan to restart work on Taiwan's No. 4 nuclear power plant in northeastern Taiwan. The project was mothballed in 2014 despite being nearly completed. Nuclear power advocates have argued that it should be completed to give Taiwan a baseload source of low-emission electricity.
