The Ministry of Agriculture is requiring all food-waste transportation trucks to be installed with GPS as a safeguard against tainted waste being transported to hog farms.
The ministry restricted the use of food waste in rearing hogs in the aftermath of last month's African Swine Fever breakout, as food waste was implicated as the most likely cause.
Longer-term measures are being considered to strengthen monitoring of food-waste handling to ensure it is properly treated, with amendments to the Waste Disposal Act expected to be introduced next month.
In the meantime, GPS trackers will be mandatorily installed on food-waste trucks by Dec. 7.
The outbreak occurred at a Taichung pig farm and didn't spread to other farms.
