Typhoon Kong-rey made landfall in Taitung's Chenggong Township at 1:40 p.m. today.
The Central Weather Administration says it's the first typhoon in Taiwan's history to make landfall after mid-October.
Its center is now 40 kilometers north northeast of Taidong city and moving northwestward with a faster speed of 24 kilometers per hour.
The CWA says the typhoon is expected to weaken quickly now that it has hit land. and from its satellite image one can see that Kong-rey's eye has disappeared.
But it'll continue to bring fierce winds and a tremendous amount of rain to the eastern half of Taiwan.
The total rainfall so far has reached beyond 720 millimeters in Yilan Datong and 590 in Hualian Xiulin.
