Tainan Railway Underground Project Clears Major Hurdle
Posted on 2026-01-30 15:10:15
Tainan's long-awaited urban railway underground project hit a major milestone today as tracks were officially joined across the entire eight-kilometer route.
Transport Minister Chen Shih-kai marked the occasion by announcing that work will now shift to power systems and signaling, with the goal of opening the line by the end of 2026.
Chen said the project will help 'stitch' the city back together by eliminating level crossings, underpasses, and overpasses that have long affected traffic and urban connectivity.
While the project faced cultural heritage preservation challenges, Chen said these assets would be properly preserved.
Mayor Huang Wei-che said the project—along with two new commuter stations—is expected to improve rail efficiency and support broader urban development.
