Taichung MRT Crane Accident Workers Receive Suspended Sentences

Two workers involved in a Taichung construction accident have been sentenced
to time in prison for negligence leading to death.

The May 2023 incident occurred when a crane arm fell onto the Taichung Metro
Green Line tracks, and a moving MRT train collided with the debris.

The Taichung District Court determined that the crane operator and signalman
noticed that a temporary pin and rotating plate on the crane were jammed, but
failed to follow proper procedures and continued operation, causing the
collapse.

One was sentenced to one year and two months, the other to one year, but were
granted 3-years suspended sentences.

Other personnel, including the site manager, were not indicted due to
insufficient evidence.



The case can still be appealed.
