Taroko Marathon Cancelled Due to Earthquake Damage

The Taroko Gorge Marathon is officially cancelled this year, due to
earthquake damage.

Organizers say this year's race cannot continue as planned, after a major
earthquake in April severely damaged sections of the Central Cross-Island
Highway and caused multiple collapses along the route.

They say they will continue to monitor progress on highway repairs, and
discuss with the park office and other experts, whether the marathon can
resume.

The organizers expressed hopes that if things progress smoothly, some parts
of the race may return next year.


The Taroko Gorge Marathon is an internationally recognized event, with its
biggest highlight being running within a national park.

It attracts over 13,000 participants each year.
