MOE says scholarships are 'merit based' amid Vietnam student claims

The Ministry of Education says scholarships for international students are awarded based on academic merit ...
.... rejecting claims that Vietnamese students automatically receive government subsidies.
The ministry says applicants are selected by Taiwan's overseas representative offices through a competitive process, with annual quotas and eligibility requirements.
Under the Taiwan Scholarship program, undergraduate recipients can receive up to 40-thousand NT per semester towards tuition and fees, plus a monthly living allowance of 15-thousand NT.
However, they cannot receive other scholarships or subsidies from Taiwanese government agencies or educational institutions at the same time.
The ministry says false claims risk distorting public understanding of education policy and unfairly stigmatizing Vietnamese students in Taiwan.
