The Taipei District Prosecutors Office has launched an investigation after hundreds of Bank SinoPac customers reported unauthorized transfers from their accounts.
The Financial Supervisory Commission says the bank has identified 427 suspicious transactions affecting 419 customers, involving more than 40-million NT.
Each transfer was worth around 100-thousand NT, with the money sent to a single account at Taipei Fubon Bank, which has since been temporarily frozen.
The Criminal Investigation Bureau says police had received 68 reports by noon yesterday, and the case is being investigated as a possible computer-related crime.
Meanwhile, Bank SinoPac has notified affected customers and advanced its own funds to restore the money taken from their accounts.
The F-S-C says it has instructed the bank to ensure that customers' interests are protected.
