Czech Media Strike Over Gov't Plan to Change Funding Source

Czech public media workers have gone on a one-day strike to protest a government plan to change how public broadcasters are funded.
The plan, led by populist billionaire turned Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (aan-DRAY BA-buhs), would finance public radio and television from the state budget instead of regular fees from individuals, households or businesses.
The media would receive about 15% less money, which could lead to staff layoffs, limited production and program cancellations.
Critics say this plan could threaten media independence.
On Tuesday, Czech TV and radio aired limited programming, while university students and others planned rallies in support of the strike.
Labor unions, international media organizations, and Czech athletes have also backed the strike.
