Spain's transport minister announces resignation after deadly train crash
Posted on 2026-11-04 14:40:13
Spain's transport minister says he's stepping down after a high-speed train
crash killed 69 people last week.

Óscar Puente told lawmakers he could not stay in office after two deadly
crashes on the same rail line this year.

The first killed 46 people in January.

Puente says a signaling failure stopped several trains on the
Madrid-to-Seville line last week.

He says controllers then cleared one train to move, even though another was
stopped on the tracks ahead.

The government has approved emergency aid for victims and their families.

It also plans to cut services on the line during a safety review and speed up
work on a new signaling system.

Puente's announcement comes less than four weeks before Spain's early
parliamentary election.
