The Coast Guard Administration says a man attempting to smuggle animals into Kinmen has been indicted.
Officials say the suspect was stopped after returning to Kinmen by a ferry from Quanzhou, China earlier this year.
Officers found he had concealed eight black-breasted leaf turtles, each wrapped inside stockings and taped to one thigh.
And a marmot, a kind of large ground squirrel, was sedated and secured to his other thigh.
If successfully smuggled into Taiwan, each of the turltes could have sold for up to $30-thousand NT on the black market., or passed off as a rarer species and sold for up to $75-thousand NT.
As for marmots, the Coast Guard noted that the species serves as a primary natural host for the pneumonic plague, creating a risk of the deadly disease spreading if the animal did not undergo proper quarantine.
Officials add that suspected smuggling and other illegal activities can be reported via the Coast Guard's 24-hour "118" hotline.
