Braised pork rice tops survey of Taiwanese foods

Braised pork rice is the food that best represents Taiwan, according to a new
survey by National Taiwan Normal University.

Nearly three in ten respondents picked the dish.

Stinky tofu came in second, followed by bubble tea.

Beef noodle soup drew just under three percent.

The researcher who led the survey says the results show how closely people
identify Taiwanese food with what they eat every day.

He points out that braised pork rice and stinky tofu rarely appear at formal
banquets.

Japanese food was the clear favorite among foreign cuisines, with 44 percent
of respondents choosing it.

Thai food came in second, followed by Western food.

The university surveyed just over a thousand people by phone in August.
