The Cabinet's proposed 607.6-billion-NT spending plan for next year has moved to committee review after Premier Cho Jung-tai answered questions from lawmakers.
The proposal includes 145.7-billion NT for defense, including coastal attack and surveillance drones, unmanned boats and a new missile defense system.
It also sets aside 233.8-billion NT for state-run oil supplier CPC, which has accumulated losses partly because of government efforts to keep fuel and natural gas prices stable.
Another 11.1-billion NT would fund planned allowance increases for military personnel, civil servants and local officials.
The additional spending would leave the government facing a budget shortfall of around 47.6-billion NT next year, with more than 200-billion NT in government debt also needed to cover spending and debt repayments.
