A man who robbed a bank in New Taipei with a pair of stolen scissors has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison.
The New Taipei District Court says the 50-year-old man, surnamed Wang, stole the scissors from a nearby dumpling shop before entering a Taishin Bank branch in Banqiao in June.
Wang threatened a customer and demanded money from bank staff, who handed over more than 400-thousand NT in cash.
However, instead of fleeing, he sat down in the bank's waiting area and was arrested by police shortly afterwards.
The court says Wang confessed to the robbery, telling investigators he was unable to afford rent or food and wanted to go to prison to receive free meals.
It also cited his previous theft convictions when handing down the sentence.
