The Zhuoshui River -- located in Central Taiwan -- has the highest concentration of riverbank litter among waterways surveyed by the environmental group Society of Wilderness.
The group says its first survey of the Zhuoshui River basin found an average of 361 bags of rubbish per kilometer.
The survey covered 152 kilometers of riverbanks, including the main river and major drainage channels in Yunlin County.
Plastic bottles and containers accounted for the largest share of rubbish, at nearly 26 percent, followed by bagged household waste and disposable cups and tableware.
The group also identified several major dumping hotspots and is urging authorities to use the findings to prioritize clean-up efforts.
Meanwhile, a follow-up survey of the Tamsui River found that riverbank litter had dropped by about 65 percent compared with last year.
