Japan has launched a new national agency to strengthen its preparations for major natural disasters.
The agency, which began operating Monday, will coordinate disaster prevention, emergency response and reconstruction.
It will start with 350 staff and be overseen by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Reconstruction Minister Goshi Hosono.
The move follows concerns about Japan's readiness for another major disaster like the 2011 earthquake and tsunami that triggered the Fukushima nuclear crisis.
Officials say the goal is to strengthen disaster management nationwide, including improving conditions in evacuation centers.
