A Taiwanese man has been arrested in the Philippines for allegedly holding three people captive and forcing them to work in online romance and telephone scams.
Philippine police say the 32-year-old man, surnamed Peng, and a Malaysian accomplice were arrested during a raid on a condominium in Manila on October 28th.
The three Filipino victims, two women and a man, were allegedly recruited for fake virtual assistant jobs before having their phones confiscated and being forced to work up to 12 hours a day preparing scam scripts.
Police say the suspects face charges including human trafficking, illegal detention and coercion.
Taiwan's representative office in the Philippines says it will send officials to visit Peng and monitor the investigation.
