Indonesia and Singapore have agreed to work together more closely to tackle illegal land burning, which has blanketed Southeast Asia with a toxic haze in recent weeks.
On Tuesday, the foreign ministers of the two countries agreed to form a task force to enhance enforcement of regulations and explore new regulations.
The haze mainly comes from fires started to clear land for farming in western Indonesia.
This year’s fires are the worst on record, partly because of hotter and drier weather attributed to the El Niño weather pattern.
The situation has raised health concerns and public backlash in the region.
Singapore has sent warning letters to Indonesian companies that may be linked to the fires, while Indonesia has taken legal action against individuals and companies.
