Novel drug-resistant bacteria identified, study warns

Researchers in Taiwan are warning of a nearly untreatable "superbug" with global public health implications.
Researchers at Taipei Veterans General Hospital and National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University have identified a new mutation in a drug-resistant strain of "Klebsiella pneumoniae" ...
... a common cause of infections in hospitals ... that can cause pneumonia and urinary tract infections.
The mutation changes the structure of a protein targeted by antibiotics, making several classes of drugs less effective.
The strain was found in samples from two hospitalized COVID-19 patients in 2021.
Both patients recovered.
However, the researchers warned that the bacteria could become even harder to treat if they develop further mutations .... or gain the ability to break down antibiotics that work against a wide range of bacteria.
