The Ministry of Transportation and Communications says, it will propose amendments to the law that will aim to strengthen penalties for driving electric mini scooters while under the influence.
The ministry says, it will pass the proposal over to the Executive Yuan next month.
The MOTC adds that the amendments will aim to equalize penalties for driving the e scooters while impaired to those for driving a car or motorbike.
This comes as statistics from the Ministry of the Interior show a 717% increase in the first 9 months of the year for drugged driving on the e scooters...
as compared to the same time last year.
The MOTC notes that availability of rapid saliva testing for drugs has contributed to the ability to confirm drug-impaired driving.
According to the ministry, proposed penalties will be the same as those for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol...
with vehicles confiscated and license plates impounded.
The ministry says it will submit the proposals to the Cabinet by the end of next month.
