Champi land warning could expand across Taiwan

Land warnings for Typhoon Champi could expand to most of western Taiwan this
afternoon.

The Central Weather Administration says the warning could eventually cover
the entire main island, along with Penghu and Matsu.

For now, it covers Yilan, Hualien, Taitung and the Hengchun Peninsula.

Forecasters expect the storm's expanding wind field to reach eastern Taiwan
or the Hengchun Peninsula early tomorrow.

They also say landfall in Yilan or northern Hualien remains possible, and the
storm could slow or stall near Taiwan.

Rain will intensify tonight, with northern and Yilan mountain areas facing
particularly heavy rainfall tomorrow into early Saturday.

Coastal areas face powerful gusts and dangerous waves, with rain expected to
ease gradually from Saturday afternoon.

Hualien County's Fengbin Township (豐濱鄉) has suspended work and classes from
one this afternoon.
