Etomidate ranks second among drugs encountered by students
Posted on 2026-10-22 13:35:13
The Ministry of Education says etomidate has become the second most common
drug encountered by students, behind ketamine.

The drug is found in vape cartridges commonly known as "zombie vapes."

Education Minister Cheng Ying-yao (鄭英耀) says it overtook cannabis and
amphetamines in 2024.

He warns that some products feature cartoon designs or resemble USB devices
and bubble tea, making the risks harder to recognize.

The ministry says drug-prevention lessons reached more than 50-thousand
classes last year, and over 48-thousand through September this year.

The lessons focus on recognizing suspicious products and refusing drugs.

The ministry is also considering saliva tests to help schools identify
possible drug use earlier.

Cheng says it is working with police on joint procurement, with
implementation awaiting legislative changes.
