FTC blocks Grab's US$600M foodpanda deal over Uber ties

The Fair Trade Commission has rejected Grab Holdings' proposal to acquire Foodpanda's Taiwan operations for 600-million U-S dollars, citing Grab's ties with Uber.
The commission says there is concern those links could undermine competition in Taiwan's food delivery market.
F-T-C Commissioner Shin Chih-chung says three commissioners voted to block the deal and one favored conditional approval, while a fifth commissioner recused.
Shin said Uber's C-E-O had previously served on Grab's board, and the two companies have maintained close business ties in other markets, have overlapping board membership and history of business cooperation.
The F-T-C commissioner stressed that the F-T-C believes that such ties could reduce Grab's incentive and ability to compete with Uber Eats in Taiwan.
Grab has said it is disappointed with the decision.
It also said the move will prevent the company from introducing "innovative services, reasonable earning opportunities and improved service standards" for consumers, delivery workers and merchants in Taiwan as planned.
