MOA: may propose agriculture damage caused by animals into disaster funding
Posted on 2026-10-20 19:08:14
Invasive green iguanas are causing serious damage to red bean crops in
Pingtung ... prompting calls for government compensation for affected
farmers.

KMT lawmaker Su Ching-chuan (蘇清泉) says farmers in Wandan Township have seen
their crops eaten by the fast-breeding reptiles.

Agriculture Minister Chen Jun-ji says damage caused by wild animals isn't
currently covered by government disaster relief programs.

However, he says the ministry is considering changes to the law that would
allow farmers to receive compensation for damage caused by iguanas and
monkeys.

Chen adds that the ministry may offer special assistance to red bean farmers
in Pingtung, depending on the extent of their losses.

He also says Taiwan's estimated green iguana population has fallen from
260-thousand in 2024 to 180-thousand last year, following government removal
efforts.
