A Chinese exchange student has been deported after he posted a video in which
he used forced perspective to apparently 'crush' President Lai Ching-te
(賴清德) between his fingers.

The NTU exchange student was standing at some distance from Lai, who was
attending an event at the university. Subtitles read, "Lai Ching-te is right
in front of you. Could this be the only chance in your lifetime?"

The student said, "Got the little Lai Ching-te" while making the crushing
motion.

The National Immigration Agency said he was deported under regulations
governing Chinese visitors to Taiwan ... and that he'll be barred from
entering Taiwan for five years.

The student had deleted the video post from Douyin.

In a statement, he said he realized the post was inappropriate after reading
critical comments and reflecting on them.

Shortly before the deportation was announced Straits Exchange Foundation
Secretary-General Luo Wen-jia (羅文嘉) said if the student wished to remain in
Taiwan and complete his exchange program, "I think we should respect his
choice."

He added, "This could also be a lesson in understanding Taiwan."
