Man accused of using VPN to illegally bet on local election results
Posted on 2026-10-16 19:17:13
An engineer surnamed Chen has been accused of illegally betting on the
outcomes of Taiwan’s local government elections.

Prosecutors in Nantou County say that Chen used a virtual private network, or
VPN, to access Polymarket.

That's a platform where gamblers can place bets on the outcomes of future
events, and it has been banned in Taiwan.

Chen is said to have wagered cryptocurrency worth roughly NT18,000 on the
results of the elections for the heads of five local governments.

These actions violate the Public Officials Election and Recall Act, which
prohibits gambling on elections.

Bail has been set at NT50,000 and his cryptocurrency is currently being held.
