MOA Considers Classifying Wildlife Crop Damage as Natural Disaster

The Ministry of Agriculture is backing a proposal to make farmers eligible for disaster relief when wild animals damage their crops.
Agriculture Minister Chen Chun-chi told lawmakers that the ministry supports amending the Agricultural Development Act to include damage caused by wildlife.
The move comes amid growing complaints about monkeys destroying crops ... including mangoes, peaches and persimmons.
Chen warns that unless the problem is addressed, monkeys could spread into more areas.
Under current rules, farmers can receive disaster assistance for certain weather-related crop losses ... but damage caused by wild animals is not covered.
Chen says agriculture and forestry agencies are assessing the extent of the damage while working to drive monkeys away or remove them from affected areas.
