The Supreme Court has upheld a 17-year prison sentence for a gangster involved in the detention and assault of a convenience store clerk who later died by suicide.
The court rejected an appeal by Liu Chia-yu (劉佳宥), making the sentence final.
According to the ruling, Liu and several others detained and repeatedly assaulted the clerk in a Tainan convenience store in 2023 over allegations that he had stolen money.
The group allegedly forced him to sign a one-million-NT cashier's check and took his gold necklace.
They later demanded 200-thousand NT dollars from his family and continued to detain him.
The court found that one of Liu's accomplices also shot the clerk in the waist before the man jumped from a 13th-floor balcony and died.
Two other defendants received prison terms of 12 and 14 years.
